Bach Flowers

"Health is our heritage, our right. It's the complete and total union between soul, mind and body and this isn't an far ideal and difficult to reach but so simple and natural that much of us neglect it." Dr. Edward Bach (1886 - 1936 )

Edward Bach was born on 24 September 1886 in the outskirts of Birmingham and died on 27 November 1936 at the age of 50. Since childhood he felt a deep love of nature, trees, plants and animals, and was animated by the desire to heal people. In his medical studies, he soon recognised that each individual's personality is much more crucial than simple physical symptoms for the success of any cure. From here evolved the motto of his flower therapy: "Heal your personality and the body will follow".

Through his experiments he ascertained that seven groups of bacteria live in the intestine, and that each of these groups acted on a specific type of personality among his patients. In 1930 he began writing "Heal Thyself", whose main point is the message of hope for self-healing for people who until then were considered incurable. He emphasized the importance of joy and happiness in our lives. Good spiritual health not only attracts physical health, but is also an indication that man can live on this earth a satisfying existence, full and free from external influences. Dr Bach wrote: "When we obey the dictates of our soul, of our superior self, by which we are guided through instinct and intuition, then we can lead a happy and fulfilled life."

How does illness develop?

Edward Bach, in the course of his work, came to recognise that behind every physical illness there is a spiritual-psychological conflict, that the person involved often does not recognise on a conscious level, and that therefore expresses itself in a physical illness. The cause of illness is therefore to be found not in harmful bacteria or viruses, but in a disharmony in the state of mind or in the behaviour of a person. It is this disharmony that offers the occasion for bacteria and viruses to penetrate in the body and cause the individual to be ill: "...since it is ascertained that the personality without conflicts is immune to illness." Illness is thus considered, in Bach flower therapy, not as an enemy to fight but as a beneficial friend that wants to warn us of a psychological and spiritual problem.

The aim of a doctor is not to cure a sick body, but a sick person, since the health of each of us depends on our way of thinking, our feelings and our emotions. Health means indeed: harmony, rhythm, ability to think in a positive and constructive way, with happiness. Such is indeed the power of man's thinking on his body, which is, in fact, only the vehicle, the means by which he accomplishes his journey on Earth.

Edward Bach had discovered, with the help of his intuition, his sensibility and his scientific research, that the energy frequencies of the flowers of certain plants (plants of superior order), obtained through a simple and natural method, have an harmonizing effect on psychological conflicts. He could observe how illnesses resulting from these conflicts disappeared not long after the assumption of these flower essences.

Each of the flowers discovered by Dr Bach vibrates on a certain energy frequency, which corresponds to a frequency of positive energy in our soul. Each of these energy frequencies contains some information and corresponds to spiritual qualities such as love, wisdom, humility, joy.

Thirty seven of the 38 Bach Flowers are flowers from wild shrubs and trees, with exception of Rock Water that is prepared with pure natural water of a fountain with healing properties. The effect, of taking Bach Flower Remedies, is not to suppress the negative attitudes but to transform them in positive attitudes, stimulating the body's own capacity to heal itself, releasing the physic system to engage completely in the fight against sickness and stress.

They act specifically on the emotional condition of the affected person, so, two persons with the same complaint could benefit from different Bach Flowers. For example, both could suffer from arthritis, one could be resigned to the disease, while the other maybe impatient with it, so different Bach Flowers will be fitted to each case.

One of my favourite remedies and one that I frequently use at the beginning of my consultations is the Rescue Remedy®, which is composed of the five remedies: Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis. The Rescue Remedy® Cream is also available, with Crab Apple joined, for external used as a ointment.

Rescue Remedy® which is available from Health Food stores, is wonderful for: acute and emergency cases (accidents); anticipatory suffering situations (before exams, interviews, dentist, surgery, etc.) and after acute situations, such as post surgery, loss, grief etc.

I recommend that you always keep one bottle in your bag and another at home!! I’d never be without it!

Bach Flower Remedies are totally harmless and may be safely prescribed and used by anyone. It was Dr Bach’s wish that people should learn to heal themselves! If you, too, would like to share the secrets of essences and bring their healing qualities into your life - please contact me about our Bach Flower Essentials workshops
